Stanislaus County students surpassed students in every county in the state to take the title of  “County of the Year” for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Fit for the Future” campaign.
“Stanislaus County led the way in participation in the Governor’s Challenge last year with over 100,000 students recording more than a million active days,” said Jake Steinfeld, council chairman for the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Throughout the State, more than 339,000 students, parents and teachers participated in the 2008-2009 Governor’s Challenge, according to the campaign. All of the schools combined recorded over 5,870,000 days of physical activity.
Stanislaus County was responsible for 22 percent of the state’s physical activity days, according to campaign information.
They also did more physical activity than the Los Angeles area, which is 15 percent bigger than Stanislaus County, said Tom Changnon, Stanislaus County superintendent of education.
“We out-distanced all the counties,” Changnon said. “We left them in the dust.”
