University event to bring out the scientist in everyone

With an itinerary boasting electric orbs, tortoises, and zombie apocalypse preparedness, California State University Stanislaus’ Fourth Annual Science Day is guaranteed to have something for everyone.

The Fourth Annual Science Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Naraghi Hall & Science One Building on the CSU Stanislaus campus. For more information call 667-3311. There is no charge to attend.

“There is something for everybody,” said professor of Biological Sciences Mark Grobner. “Guests can plant seeds, examine rock and fossil collections, build an atom, extract DNA from cheek cells, and even learn how to perform CPR.”

If that was not enough to convince the science fanatic in everyone to go, other Science Day activities include touring the University’s greenhouse, the opportunity to examine and handle real hearts and learn how they function, and exploring a python lair.

“This is also the first year we have Turlock Irrigation District and Modesto Irrigation District participating,” said Grobner. “They will be bringing an educational trailer, where guests can learn about the Tuolumne River Basin, water cycle, solar power, and energy conservation.”

Grobner also detailed the Zombie Apocalypse activity, where students from James Enochs High School in Modesto will don zombie garb to effectively teach guests why they need to learn science in order to survive a potential disaster.

 “There is actually almost too much going on,” joked Grobner.

This year’s Science Day is a collaborative effort of the university, as Service Learning director Julie Fox reports that over 200 faculty, staff, and student volunteers are scheduled to help during the Saturday event.

“We want the community to see this event as a time that they can bring their family and enjoy learning and enjoy the university,” said Fox. “We are a part of Stanislaus County and we’re a part that gives back. There’s an ethic of service here at CSU Stanislaus.”

“We hope this event will help increase science literacy and get kids excited about science,” added Grobner. “Hopefully, we’ll also get them interested in the university.”
