BRINGING ART TO COLUMBIA PARK

Mayra Cortez explains the outline of the Aztec inspired mural to volunteer Jorge Garcia Sunday morning. The mural was designed around the ideas of local children and when completed is expected to last for 5-10 years (CANDY PADILLA/The Journal).

Stanislaus State art students and community volunteers spent last weekend creating a new public art piece at Turlock’s Columbia Park.

Stanislaus State Art Professor Jacob Weigel is spearheading the project with the students as part of the Mayor’s Public Policy Award. The final design features lots of images from nature, like birds, butterflies and flowers, all done in vibrant color scheme at the behest of some of Turlock’s younger residents. The design was created through the collaboration of the university students and the community, particularly those living in the park neighborhood.

The artists are hoping to have the mural completed and unveiled on Oct. 17.
