County unemployment rate falls in August

The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County continued on a downward trend for the month of August, according to the latest report from the Employment Development Department.

The August unemployment rate in the county was at 8 percent, down from a revised rate of 8.9 percent in July and below the year ago estimate of 8.5 percent, according to the EDD.

Stanislaus County’s job sectors saw either growth or no declines for the month, except for the Mining, Logging and Construction sector, which had an estimated decline of 100 positions.

The manufacturing sector saw the largest increase for the month, with approximately 1,900 positions added in August. Of those, 16.8 percent were in food manufacturing.

Other sectors that saw job growth for the month were Farming (800), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (100), Educational and Health Services (100), and Leisure and Hospitality (300).

The labor force in Stanislaus County for August was at 249,200 with the number of unemployed estimated at 19,900.

Merced County had an unemployment rate of 9.3 percent, down from 10.5 in July. San Joaquin County had an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent, down from the 8.5 percent posted in July.

The unemployment rate in California was at 5.6 percent for August and 5 percent in the nation for the same time period. Payroll employment (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 16,534,300 in August, a gain of 63,100 jobs since July. This followed a revised gain of 18,600 in July, down from a preliminary estimate of 36,400 jobs.

Turlock had an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent in August, down from the 8 percent posted in July. Denair had a rate of 4.5 percent, which is a drop from the 5.1 percent posted in July. Hughson had an August rate of 11.5 percent, down from the 12.8 percent posted in July. Keyes had a rate of 13.1 percent in August, down from the 14.6 percent in July. Ceres had an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent in August, down from the 9.6 percent in July.

The occupations with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for August were: Registered Nurses – 463; Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers – 453; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers – 169; Retail Salespersons – 150; Janitors and Cleaners, Except Maids and Housekeeping – 120; Teacher Assistants – 109; Security Guards – 101; Maintenance and Repair Workers – 100; Occupational Therapists – 96; and taxi Drivers and Chauffeurs – 91.
