MERCED COUNTY — A group of boaters was safely rescued late Saturday night after their vessel began taking on water upriver from McConnell State Recreation Area in Ballico, authorities said.
At approximately 10:18 p.m. on July 5, deputies with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of stranded boaters on the Merced River. Initial search efforts were hindered by darkness and challenging terrain, the department said.
A Sheriff's Office helicopter joined the response and quickly located the boaters along the river. Using its spotlight, the aircraft guided them a short distance downstream to McConnell State Recreation Area, where deputies were waiting to assist. No injuries were reported.
“The quick actions and coordination between our deputies and the helicopter crew made all the difference,” the department said in a statement. “Great job to our team for their diligence in locating and safely returning the individuals to dry land.”
Officials used the incident to remind the public about the risks of water recreation during the summer months. They emphasized that rivers, lakes, and swimming pools all present dangers — particularly when safety protocols are ignored.
The Sheriff’s Office offered the following water safety tips:
- Wear a life jacket: Always use a properly fitting flotation device.
- Dress appropriately: Avoid heavy clothing that can weigh you down.
- Stay sober: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reaction time.
- Check the weather: Avoid water activities in stormy or rainy conditions.
- Know the river: Be aware of currents, depth, and hidden hazards.
- Use safe zones: Swim only in designated, monitored areas.
- Stay alert: Watch for changing weather and signs of danger.
- Buddy up: Never swim alone.
- Learn rescue skills: Basic rescue techniques can save lives.
Officials urged residents to prioritize safety and remain vigilant near water as temperatures climb and recreation increases throughout the season.
