History of business:

A new business in downtown Turlock aims to meet the city’s beauty needs by helping community members feel comfortable in their own skin.

Modesto resident Gifty Aidoo opened her third Aesthetic Lab Inc. location in Turlock this month, providing a space where locals can receive services like Botox, fillers, laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation, to name a few.

Aidoo is an experienced nurse practitioner and certified aesthetic injector who opened her first office in Fremont in 2019, then expanded to Modesto in July 2020. Her business had grown extensively during the pandemic, she said, and a second location was necessary to keep up with her and her team’s growing clientele. Then on Oct. 1, she celebrated the grand opening of her third location in the heart of Turlock’s downtown core.

“We are so excited to be here. My uncle has lived in Turlock since the 70s, so we frequent here,” Aidoo said. “I can’t wait for all of the holiday decorations and the lights.”

Aidoo said she now services between 25 and 30 patients a day, and the new Turlock space will be open on Tuesdays in order to help keep up with demand. Soon, she’ll be opening a mobile lab.

According to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 11% of women surveyed indicated they are now more interested in cosmetic surgery or non-surgical procedures, like those offered by Aidoo, than they were before COVID-19.

Aidoo said she’s seen a 4% increase in clients of all ages and genders, and said the rise of Zoom meetings and social distancing has people looking at their reflection more often than they did before. This has resulted in an increase of clients wanting less wrinkles, plumper lips and maybe even a lift or two.

“This has created the biggest boom since Kodak,” Aidoo said. “For the first time, you have professionals, teachers, anyone who has been on Zoom looking at themselves in the mirror and not always loving what they see. When we look good, we feel good and when we feel good, we do better in general.”

Efficiency is key at Aesthetic Lab, she added, with the business offering drop-in availability with low price points. It’s important to Aidoo to help everyone look and feel their best, she said, no matter their income.

“Body image is a very vulnerable topic, and a lot of people think it’s only for Hollywood,” Aidoo said. “To be a part of someone's beauty journey is really rewarding.”
