For the past five years, the Turlock Firefighters Local #2434 have foregone their traditional blue uniform shirts during the month of October and donned bright pink t-shirts in an effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

The firefighters sell their specially designed pink t-shirts with the proceeds going to the Bill and Elsie Ahlem Cancer Endowment at Emanuel Cancer Center. This year, the campaign raised $20,840 — the most money since the firefighters started their t-shirt fundraiser.

"It was actually a really good year," said Turlock Fire Capt. Frank Saldivar during his campaign update to the Turlock City Council on Dec. 13.

This year's fundraising amount surpassed last year's total by over $6,000.

"I want to thank the community ...everybody who supported the awareness campaign," said Saldivar.
