The Merced County Sheriff’s Department found the body of a missing 3-year-old boy in a Delhi canal Monday afternoon, nearly 48 hours after he was reported missing.

The 3-year-old, Andres Tomas, was last seen Saturday afternoon at his grandmother’s house, located in the area of Letteau Avenue and Shanks Road. The yard abuts a canal and is loosely fenced with falling barbed wire, according to the sheriff’s department.

The boy’s grandmother was watching him and told the sheriff's department she lost sight of him for just a moment as she rounded a corner. When she came around, he had disappeared.

The boy’s remains were found around 2 p.m. Monday at a barrier in the Turlock Irrigation District canal near the area of Letteau Avenue and Griffith Road. The body was about seven feet down and two miles from the grandmother’s yard.

The sheriff's department had been deploying divers in the canal since Saturday night. Most of the canal had a depth of four and a half feet deep and has a visibility range of about two feet. The sheriff's department asked TID to slow the flow of the swift moving water on Sunday afternoon. The process takes about 12 hours to show results.

The boy’s remains were taken to the Merced County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.
