The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department dive team recovered the body of a missing swimmer nearly six hours after he was last seen.
The deceased has been identified as Nelson Guerra, 21, of Turlock.
Guerra and friends were swimming in a cove near the main boat ramp at Modesto Reservoir Friday afternoon. They were swimming to an island when Guerra became distressed and went underwater, according to the sheriff's department.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area around 4 p.m. Deputies, firefighters, and two helicopters attempted to locate Guerra but they were unable to find him.
The area where Guerra was last seen was about 100 feet from the shoreline and low visibility in the water made it difficult for deputies to search, said sheriff department spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran. The area also is thick with vegetation just below the surface, which may have caused Guerra to get tangled and hampered the search efforts.
The Sheriff's Department Dive Team responded and at about 10:08 p.m. Guerra's body was found in the general area where he was last seen.
