Unemployment drops again in Stanislaus County

The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County recorded a slight decrease in the month of October, according to the latest report from the Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate in October was at 6.3 percent, down from a revised rate of 6.5 percent in September. The rate also is down from the year-ago estimate of 7.7 percent.

The sectors of Construction and Manufacturing both recorded job losses for the month, but those numbers were offset by job gains in other sectors, with the Government sector posting the largest gain.

Construction lost an estimated 200 positions, while Manufacturing posted an approximate decline of 2,700, according to the EDD. The decline in manufacturing was largely attributed to a drop in food manufacturing, which posted a decline of 26.6 percent as the harvest season came to a close.

The Government sector added an estimated 700 positions for the month, while Educational and Health Services and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities each added about 200 positions each.

Merced County had an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent, down slightly from a rate of 7.5 percent in September. San Joaquin County had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent, down from 6.6 percent posted in September.

California had an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent in October and the nation’s was at 3.9 percent for the same time period.

Turlock’s unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent in October, down from 5.8 percent in September. Denair’s rate was at 3.7 percent for the month, down from the 3.9 percent posted in September. It was also the lowest rate posted for all of Stanislaus County. Hughson had an October rate of 9.2 percent, which was a drop from the 9.4 percent posted in September. Keyes had a rate of 10.4 percent in October, which was a dip from the 10.7 percent posted in September. Ceres had an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent in October, down from the 7 percent in September.

The occupations with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for October were: Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers – 555; Registered Nurses – 356; Retail Salespersons – 181; Maintenance and Repair Workers – 147; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers – 114; Customer Service Representatives – 114; Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand – 108; Janitors and Cleaners, Except Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners – 91; Security Guards – 89; and Light Truck or Delivery Services Drivers – 85.

The 10 companies that posted the most help wanted ads for October in Stanislaus County were: Tenet Healthcare Corporation – 174; Sutter Health – 115; Robert Half International – 93; Target Corporation – 92; E&J Gallo – 70; Modesto City Schools – 58; Ceres Unified School District – 57; Foster Farms – 49; Starbucks – 55; and California State University System – 54.
