Unemployment grows slightly in Stanislaus County, drops in Turlock
Merced County total employment grew 3.99%, the fastest among the San Joaquin Valley’s eight counties in 2021. Stanislaus County total employment grew the second fastest at 3.56%.

The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County increased in the month of December as several sectors reported job losses and only a few sectors reported job gains, according to the latest report from the Employment Development Department.

Stanislaus County’s unemployment rate came in at 5.6 percent in December, up from a revised rate of 5.2 percent in November. For the month of December, Stanislaus County had a reported labor force of approximately 241,900, of which an estimated 13,600 were unemployed. In November, the estimated number of unemployed in Stanislaus County was at 12,700.

The Farming sector took the biggest hit in Stanislaus County, losing around 1,700 jobs for the month, according to the EDD. That was followed by Mining, Logging and Construction, which lost an estimated 500 jobs for the month.

Other sectors reporting job losses for the month were: Manufacturing (100), Professional and Business Services (200) and Government (300).

Only two sectors reported job gains for the month of December. Trade, Transportation and Utilities, which includes retail, added about 100 positions, as did Educational and Health Services.

Merced County had an unemployment rate of 7.9 percent in December, up from the 6.5 percent posted in November. San Joaquin County had an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent, up slightly from the 5.3 percent posted in November. California’s unemployment came in at 3.7 percent for December and the nation’s was at 3.4 percent for the same time frame.

Turlock’s unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in December, down from 4.1 percent in November. Denair’s rate was 3.1 percent in December, up from 2.9 percent in November. Hughson had a December rate of 5.8 percent, which was an increase from the 5.3 percent posted in November. Keyes saw a rise from 7.1 percent in November to 7.7 percent in December. Ceres had an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent in December, up from 6.3 percent in November.

The companies posting the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for December were: Tenet Healthcare Corporation - 231; Yosemite Community College District - 135; Emanuel Medical Center - 89; Sutter Health - 87; Ceres Unified School District – 83; Memorial Medical Center, Modesto - 76; and Kaiser Permanente – 75; California State University System – 67; E. & J. Gallo Winery – 67; and Save Mart Supermarkets – 56.

The positions with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County in December were: Registered Nurses - 281; Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers - 224; Retail Salespersons - 195; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers - 180; Customer Service Representatives - 114; Maintenance and Repair Workers, General - 109; First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers – 90; Stock Clerks, Sales Floor - 82; Security Guards - 74; and Combined Food Preparation and Serving Workers, including Fast Food – 65.
