The seemingly impossible and gravity-defying acts of the New Shanghai Circus Acrobats of China will be taking the stage at the Turlock Community Theatre Saturday evening.
The troupe of gymnasts, jugglers, contortionists, knife throwers, and comedians will perform their feats of strength, balance and endurance at the theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and range in price from $29, $35, and $39.
“It’s a pretty amazing show to see and watch what they can do with their bodies,” said Kit Casey, the managing director of the Turlock Community Theatre. “There will be lots of dazzling feats of acrobatics.”
The New Shanghai Circus was formed in Shanghai in 1991 by Lizhi Zhao, an artistic and music director. He went about recruiting some of the best performers in Shanghai and created a show that combines elements of traditional acrobatics with Western style showmanship.
The troupe made their first visit to the United States in 1998, performing in Branson, Mo. They subsequently went on to perform on Broadway for a series of sold out shows. In addition to yearly tours throughout the United States, the New Shanghai Circus has a permanent home in Branson at their own theatre.
The New Shanghai Circus has won more gold, silver and bronze medals in domestic and international circus competitions to date than any other Chinese acrobatic company. Breathtaking and polished to perfection, the singular skills performed by The New Shanghai Circus have their roots in everyday lives of the village peasants, farmers and craftsman of the Han Dynasty, including acts of Kung Fu.
