Jesse Martin, 85, of Hughson, passed away at Turlock Nursing and Rehab on Wednesday, Jan. 27. He was born in Broken Arrow, Okla. to Homer and Gracie Martin in 1924. Jesse was raised in Anderson, Mo. and, at the age of 15, he moved to Hughson and lived there since. Jesse served in the U.S. Army during WW II and received many medals and citations, including the Silver Star for his bravery. In 1947, he married Lula Thompson. For over 50 years, Jesse owned and operated a peach orchard. Also for 25 years, he worked for Hansens, later known as Champion, installing industrial equipment and was a contractor for 20 years. He was a member of the Millwright Union.
Jesse loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and houseboating. Jesse owned one of the first houseboats on Lake Don Pedro. Most of all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lula Martin; children, Wayne Martin and Allen Martin, both of Hughson; siblings, Verna Drake of Hughson, Gladys Middleton and Homer Lee Martin, Jr., both of Ceres, and Dortha Adams of Modesto; grandchildren, Kevin Martin, Travis Martin, Ryan Martin, Rachelle Madsen and Nichole Dowdy; and eight great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Allen Mortuary. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Emanuel, P.O. Box 819005, Turlock, CA 95381.
