Lena Date, 90, of Turlock/Modesto, passed away at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson after a long illness. Lena was born in El Monte, CA to Harry and Yaeno Hananouchi. She grew up much of her time in Pescadero, CA. In 1942, during World War II, her family was relocated to Tanforan Race Track in San Bruno then later sent to an internment camp in Topaz, Utah for the duration of the war. During the war Lena received permission to leave her family in the camp and go to work in Reno. While working there she met and married the love of her life, Takashi "Tak" Date. They married in 1944 and shared their lives for 49 years before his death in 1993. During their marriage, Tak brought his bride back to the family farm in Cortez, CA, southeast of Turlock. When times became hard financially, she went to work at Christoffersen's, Armour Foods, Banquet Foods, and retired in 1983 from Con-Agra Foods. She belonged to the following organizations: Cortez Presbyterian Church, Delhi Presbyterian Church, Shinwa Kai, Karoke Singing Group in Cortez. Lena was preceded in death by her husband Takashi, sister Maybel (Frank) Date of Reno, NV, and best friend Mildred Gomez of Turlock. She is survived by her three children: Larry (Judy) Date of Turlock, Laura Date of Tracy, and Doris (Mike) Date-Burden of Modesto, three grandchildren. Brothers Isaac Hananouchi of Belmont, CA and Mike (Kay) Hananouchi of San Mateo, and sister Micky (Frank) Yoshida of Turlock and numerous cherished nephews and nieces. Visitation for Lena will be at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway in Turlock; on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 5 to 7 pm. Funeral Service will be at Allen Mortuary on Saturday, December 17th, 11:00am. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park. Donations may be made in her memory to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356.
