Mel Roberts, 85, of Hilmar, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center on Monday, Jan. 18. He was born in Ferndale in 1924. His family moved to Oakland around 1937.
Mel joined the Marines during WW II as a paratrooper. After the war, he returned home and lived in Oakland and the San Leandro area. He married his first wife, Maxine, in 1946, and was married to her for 42 year before her death in 1988. Mel also worked as a meat cutter for Safeway and Lucky’s grocery stores. In 1990, he married his second wife, Marjorie, and they settled in Hilmar. He was a bowler, golfer and a professional horseshoe player. He was a member of the Turlock Horseshoe Club. He was a gentle man.
Mel is survived by his wife, Marjorie Roberts; children, Sherry Robinson of Jackson, Gail LaTona of Vacaville, Melanie Peterson-Katz of Lafayette, Michele Tahija of Manteca and Dean LaValle of San Francisco; stepchildren, Michelle Dodd of Livermore and Mike Delgado of Modesto; 13 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine Roberts; and stepdaughter, Marcie Delgado. Mel was a devoted husband, father, stepfather and grandfather. He will be truly missed by all, especially by his little companion, Suzy.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24 at Hilmar Country Club Estates Club House, 19667 American Ave., Hilmar. Memorial contributions may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.
