A year ago, the women's soccer team gathered at Warrior Stadium to find out whether they would get an invitation to the NCAA tournament as an at-large team. Today, having already earned a spot as the CCAA Champions, the Warriors' questions were more of the who and when variety.
The NCAA unveiled the 48-team tournament bracket on Monday, and as expected, the 2013 CCAA Champions and fifth ranked Warriors will be the No. 1 seed in the West Region. No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino (11-6-3) and No. 5 seeded Cal Baptist (12-5) are the teams visiting Warrior Stadium this week to open the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Baptist will be the first round match-up, to be played at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the host receiving a bye. The Coyotes were here last week for the CCAA tournament and the Lancers are the automatic qualifier from the Pacific West Conference.
The winner will advance to the second round match at 1 p.m. Saturday against the undefeated Warriors. The Warriors beat Cal Baptist earlier in the season, 2-0, on Sept. 7 and defeated CSUSB a few days later, 5-1, on Sept. 13.
On the other half of the West Region bracket, No. 2 Western Washington hosts No. 3 Sonoma State and No. 6 Seattle Pacific in Bellingham, Wash.
Cal State Stanislaus improved to 18-0-2 when it claimed the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 2-0 win over Sonoma State. It is the team's second title in three years as it also won the 2011 championship.
In 2011, the Warriors advanced to the NCAA tournament as the No. 4 seed and took on No. 5 Chico State in La Jolla. After playing to a 1-1 draw, the Wildcats advanced by winning the penalty kick shootout, 4-3.
Last year, despite being ranked as high as No. 6 in the country late in the season, the Warriors were left-out of the NCAA tournament bracket. The Warriors had lost their season finale to Sonoma State and the semifinals of the CCAA tournament to UC San Diego.
If the Warriors win on Saturday, Cal State Stanislaus could also serve as the host site of the third and quarterfinal rounds the following week. With the other West Region winner and the two South Central sub-regional site winners coming to Warrior Stadium.
