Bulldogs land eighth consecutive league title

This season, the Turlock High boys golf team returned just two players. The rest was made up newcomers.

Did this make first-year coach Jason Boswell worried?

Nope.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Bulldogs wrapped up their eighth straight league championship by shooting a low 416 at the Central California Conference Tournament at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla. Cal State Stanislaus-bound senior Paul Smith led Turlock by carding a 78 in the 18-hole tournament, finishing with the second lowest individual score of the day.

“Everybody else was new,” Boswell said about having just two returners in Smith and Tyler Gomes. “The other four guys stepped in without experience. It’s a testament to their game and the hard work they’ve put in to get to this point.”

Smith’s score was followed closely by Teo Chiesa, who finished with an 81. Gomes (85), Hayden Sparks (86), Matt Macedo (86) and Craig Segars (90) wrapped up Turlock’s performance.

The Bulldogs are now set for Monday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championships at Pheasant Run. Pitman High’s Troy Bennett also advanced after finishing with an 87 to qualify as one of the individual finalists.

TC advances to divisional

With Kathleen Rojas landing a 4-over-par 72, the Turlock Christian High boys golf team won the Southern League Tournament on Monday at Diablo Grande Golf Course with a team score of 431, breezing past all the other competitors.

Kathleen’s sister, Esther, and Chase Ulrich both notched 86s to help lead the Eagles to the victory, while Kyle Cederlind and Thomas Sawyer finished with 90 and 93, respectively. The Rojas sisters play for the boys’ team because there’s no girls team at Turlock Christian.

Ripon Christian finished second with a 460.

The Eagles advanced on as a team to compete in Monday’s Division VI Tournament at Darkhorse Golf Club in Auburn.

Hilmar earns final playoff spot

The Hilmar High boys golf team had just the right scores at the Trans-Valley League Tournament to move on to next week’s Division V Championships, finishing in third after Jonathan O’Brien led the Yellowjackets with a 99.

Hilmar took the third and final spot at Monday’s Division V Tournament at Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione.

For the Yellowjackets, Jesminder Singh finished with a 103 and Eric Youngborg shot a 104, while teammates Trevor Mattos (104) and Zack Ribera (110) rounded out the team scores.
