Hilmar golf looks to make it four out of five

Ty Pettigrew's girls golf squad has won three of the last four Valley Foothill League titles, and the Hilmar Lady Yellowjackets are looking to make it four out of five after the 2014 year concludes.

With the help of seniors Gia Barcelos, Rebecca Sanders and last year all-leaguer Kinsey Pettigrew, the 'Jackets seem to be destined for another successful year in the VFL.

Pettigrew's squad also returns the VFL Southern Division Most Valuable Player in Makena Azevedo to lead a very experienced team.

“We expect to compete for the league championship again this year,” said Pettigrew. “We are looking to compete for it again with Hughson being our toughest competition.”

After winning last year's Southern Division Championship, the team returns three players but also welcomes three new players in sophomores Abby Brenda and Kristin Bello and junior Samantha Perry.

The newcomers should make the team stronger for at least another two years, but only time will tell when the season is underway.

Azevedo is eyeing another fruitful season Pettigrew said.

“I expect Makena to compete for the league MVP again. The rest we will just try to improve from week to week in time for the playoffs,” he said.

Only a league title would suffice for Pettigrew and company but don't expect it to come easy because the varsity girls squad will have their hands full in the VFL with all eyes directed towards the defending champions.

Hilmar High will begin its regular season on Tuesday against an opponent yet to be named at a place yet to be determined.

“This next year we will strive for consistency and overall improvement and that’s what we are looking for and by the end of the year we want to be peaking,” Pettigrew said.
