Sure, the day was hot. But that didn’t stop the players of the Pitman High and Turlock High girls golf teams from pulling off standout performances in the final Central California Conference match of the regular season on Thursday afternoon.

At the Turlock Golf and Country Club, it was the Bulldogs who won the team match by finishing with 33 fewer strokes than Pitman (234-267) to finish 10-0 before the CCC Championship Tournament at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Pheasant Run in Chowchilla. It was Turlock’s Emma Mendes who had the top score at 43, followed by teammates Abby Falke (46), Kelsi Valenzuela (48), Zara Lopez (48) and Hannah Gong (49).

It was the first time all five players scored in the 40s.

“Even though it was hot, I was hoping my team would bust out with some good scores,” Turlock coach Mary Krupka said. “We were kind of pooped out the last week and a half and needed some good golf to pull us out of our funk.”

“The final score of 234 was six strokes better than our previous best,” she added. “That is something a coach likes to see towards the end of the season.”

For the Pride, Anne Fei had her team’s best score with a 51, as both Cheyenne Horner and Karisma Garcia notched 52s and both Sheyenne Sousa and Bella Mata finished with 56s, which added up to Pitman’s second lowest team score of the season.

“Annie Fei and Karisma Garcia led the team on and off the course all year,” Pitman coach Ken Stangl said. “They have provided a good example and have provided leadership for a young team.”

Next up will be the CCC Championships, an event that the local girls will use to try to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championships in Elkhorn Country Club on Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.
