Two Bulldogs compete in national wrestling tourney

A pair of Turlock High wrestlers competed in a national tournament recently and both ended their trip with good results.
Junior Brandon Egleston and sophomore Garrett Fortado wrestled in the Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City late last month — an event that featured both Greco-Roman and freestyle action — as part of the team from California. The team, which faced competition from wrestlers all across the country, finished sixth in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Egleston finished 4-3 in the 112 weight class, and Fortado had a 4-3 mark at 98 pounds. Egleston also competed in the same tournament last year, finishing with a 7-3 record.
“It’s a great thing,” Turlock coach Mike Contreras said. “It’s doesn’t happen every season. You always want your kids to do that, but a lot of time, the kids haven’t been doing it long enough. They haven’t wrestled enough freestyle or Greco. They have to. A lot of kids want to wrestle, but they don’t have that experience.”
Junior Fabian Garcia, a two-time state competitor, was scheduled to make the trip but was injured before leaving.
