For the second consecutive season, Paul Smith’s golf season ended at the CIF Northern California Boys Golf Championships. At the same time, not many golfers in the Central Valley can say the same.

At Butte Creek Country Club in Chico on Monday, the Turlock High senior finished with a 2-over-par 74 to finish in an 11-way tie for 15th place in the 18-hole tournament that was one step from the CIF State Championships.

He missed the cut by one stroke.

Jonathan Garrick of St. Francis High was the individual medalist after carding a 68, as five other individuals qualified for the state tournament; the final three qualifiers made it with a score of 73.

Smith, who shot a 69 last week for back-to-back Sac-Joaquin Section Masters titles, finished with six birdies and six pars, but on two separate occasions had back-to-back bogeys. The day’s biggest surprise, however, came at par-4 hole No. 4, where he uncharacteristically shot a 7.

Smith now heads into the offseason, where he will prepare to play for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team starting in the fall.
