Manny Avila and Arturo Pulido gave the Warriors two first half goals as Cal State Stanislaus held on to beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-1, in men's soccer Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
With the victory, the Warriors keep pace with North Division leader Chico State as Stanislaus improved to 8-4-3 overall and 7-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Monterey Bay falls to 1-11-2 and 1-10-2 in the CCAA.
Avila got the Warriors on the board first at 12:30 on a nice header finish in front of the goalkeeper. He was set up by Arturo Pulido's cross from the far side after a pass from Nolan Holdridge.
Pulido then gave Stanislaus a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute on another free kick score from about 22 yards out at the top of the circle. He scored the game-winner on a free kick with one second left to play last Friday at Cal State East Bay.
The Otters scored their goal at 78:34 when Mucho Pefok knocked in his first of the year on a header. Less than a minute later, the Warriors got their third score thanks to the Otters.
Warrior defender TJ Grewal sends a free kick into the box, looking for Victor Regalado. An Otter defender leaped over Regalado on a clearing attempt but instead scored the goal for the Warriors.
Cal State Stanislaus had two great chances to put the game away in the second half. Andres Zamora hit the near post in the 55th minute and Grewal's shot in the 62nd minute hit the cross bar.
The Warriors next play on Sunday when they host San Francisco State at 2 p.m.
