The Merced County Sheriff Department busted a cockfight Saturday night in Hilmar, citing 13 people and arrested one.

The sheriff’s department received several reports around 10 p.m. Saturday that cockfights were happening in the 2300 block of August Avenue.

The deputies saw approximately 80 cars parked in the area when they arrived. An estimated 100 people were in attendance, most of whom fled when law enforcement arrived.

Deputies detained and cited 13 people and booked one person into jail for cockfighting after he refused to cooperate with deputies.

Betting sheets and between 300 and 400 roosters were found at the site. The Merced Animal Control department took the roosters.
