Collision west of Turlock leaves one dead

The California Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses to a fatal head-on collision that occurred Wednesday out on a rural stretch of road west of Turlock.

The two vehicle collision claimed the life of Hugo Sanchez-Rebollar, 35, of Modesto. The driver of the other vehicle, Daniel Vasquez, 40, of Gustine sustained major injuries from the crash.

The collision was reported to the California Highway patrol around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Sanchez-Rebollar was driving a Volkswagen Golf north on S. Carpenter Road and Vasquez was driving a GMC Envoy south on the same road. Near the intersection of W. Main Street, Sanchez-Rebollar went to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with the GMC, according to the CHP.

The impact sent the Volkswagen onto the east side of the road, while the GMC remained in the southbound lane.

Sanchez-Rebollar suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Vasquez had extensive injuries and was taken back ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He also was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The CHP saw several bystanders at the crash scene and are looking to talk to anyone who witnessed the crash. The investigation is ongoing and the CHP asks any witnesses to call 545-7440.
