DELHI — A 26-year-old Delhi man was arrested this week in connection with a March shooting in a residential neighborhood, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Deputies responded the afternoon of March 26 to the area of Douglas Avenue and Yvonne Drive after receiving reports of gunfire. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a driver in the area told deputies he was being followed by another vehicle. The victim confronted the driver of that vehicle, later identified as Guillermo Cardenas, who then fired at him before fleeing. The victim was not struck, but his vehicle was hit multiple times.
On April 6, sheriff’s detectives spotted Cardenas driving and attempted a traffic stop. He led detectives on a short pursuit before stopping on Lewis Circle in Delhi, where he was taken into custody, officials said.
Detectives searched Cardenas’ vehicle and found a loaded firearm on the floorboard, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A subsequent search warrant at his home uncovered a pound of methamphetamine, a pound of cocaine and other items consistent with narcotics sales. Investigators also reported finding items associated with gang activity, a loaded pistol magazine and ammunition. All of the items were accessible to two young children living in the home.
Cardenas was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm, participating in a criminal street gang, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics for sale and child endangerment.
