A 23-year-old Turlock man was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence early Friday morning near Crane Park.

The driver of a white 2017 Chevy Silverado admitted to officers on the scene that he had been drinking at a downtown pub before getting behind the wheel, according to the police report filed by Officer Brandon Ruiz.

The driver was headed northbound on Colorado Avenue when he came to East Canal Drive, where Colorado juts to the left in a northwest direction. Whether or not the driver ran the stop signs on either side of the canal isn’t clear, but he continued traveling in a northerly direction — through Crane Park — at an unknown rate of speed.

Tire tracks in the grass clearly show the pickup’s path, which indicate the driver nearly hit two large trees and two power poles. Ultimately, the Silverado hit a concrete picnic table and a concrete garbage receptacle, the latter of which was dragged underneath the truck for approximately 50 feet until the vehicle came to a stop on the north side of Yosemite Street.

“I had just gotten up to use the restroom and I heard the crash,” said a neighbor who lives on the corner of Colorado and Yosemite. “It looked like the curb is what finally stopped him. If he’d gone any further, he might’ve crashed through my fence and into my pool.”

The driver’s blood-alcohol level was not immediately available.

“He told our officer (Ruiz) that he didn’t know what street he was driving on or what he collided with,” said Turlock Police Lt. David Shaw. “He was transported to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto so he could be medically cleared before being booked.”

No injuries were reported.

Less than six hours after the incident, city crews were at the park, replacing the picnic table.

The city likely will seek reimbursement from the driver for damages to the picnic table and garbage shell, which likely will cost several thousand dollars, according to one city official.
