Hilmar man arrested after shooting at gas station, deputies say
merced sheriff

A 21‑year‑old Hilmar man was arrested Thursday night after a shooting at a Kwik Serv gas station left another man injured, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called at 7:26 p.m. Feb. 26 to the station at 8480 Lander Ave. in Hilmar, where they learned the gunfire followed an argument involving several people.

The victim was sitting in his vehicle when the suspect, identified as Cesar Reynoso Deluna, allegedly fired at him before fleeing, the Sheriff’s Office said. The victim later drove himself to a local hospital with a non‑life‑threatening forehead injury. No other individuals were hurt, and investigators believe the confrontation was isolated.

Deputies located Deluna a short time later at a residence in Hilmar, where he was arrested and the firearm was recovered. He was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.

The shooting marks the latest in a series of violent incidents in the region that have drawn increased attention from law enforcement. While overall violent crime in Merced County fluctuates year to year, sheriff’s officials have repeatedly emphasized rapid response and community reporting as key to solving cases. Recent public safety updates from the county have highlighted efforts to strengthen investigative resources and expand community outreach.
