A Merced Area California Highway Patrol officer collided with another vehicle during a pursuit of a suspect Monday evening.

Neither of the parties involved in the collision sustained significant injuries, according to the CHP.

The incident began around 8:30 p.m. Monday in the area of 4th Street and Acacia Street in Merced.

The officer, identified as Josef Eshraghi, 29, was in pursuit of a suspect on a motorcycle. The motorcycle was rapidly approaching the intersection and darted around a vehicle that was stopped there. The patrol car began to pass the vehicle on the left, when Eshraghi spotted a 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck traveling across the intersection, said Merced CHP spokesperson Officer Moises Onsurez.

Eshraghi hit the brakes on the patrol car and tried to take an evasive maneuver, but could not avoid striking the pickup truck.

The front of the 2015 Ford Explorer police vehicle struck the driver side of the Ford F150, Onsurez said.

Eshraghi immediately requested an ambulance come to the scene to tend to the people in the pickup truck.

The driver of the Ford F150, identified as Tony Vieira, 43, of Hilmar, and his passenger, a 12-year-old Hilmar resident, both had minor injuries and stated they would seek medical aid on their own.

Eshraghi also had minor injuries and said he would get medical aid on his own.

The motorcycle driver fled the area and avoided arrest.
