Man dies after altercation with deputies

A 38-year-old Modesto man died Saturday morning at a Modesto area hospital after an altercation with Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., two Sheriff’s deputies working together were flagged down by Alejandro Sanchez, 38, of Modesto, in the parking lot of Country Girl Truck Stop, 1201 S. Seventh Street in Modesto. Sanchez reported something was wrong with his truck, which was in the truck stop parking lot. Deputies learned the vehicle was not registered. Sanchez became upset when deputies advised him he would receive a citation and began fighting with them. Several other deputies were called to the scene to assist taking him into custody.

As Sanchez was being transported to a Modesto area hospital by a deputy for medical clearance and during the ride he became unresponsive. Hospital staff provided emergency medical care, but Sanchez died a short time later.

The details of the interaction between Sanchez and the deputies were not released pending the investigation.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

The Sheriff’s Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are both conducting investigations into this incident.
