Officer attacked by drunken suspect

A man who had been taken into custody for public intoxication is now facing assault charges after he attacked a Turlock Police officer while en route to jail.Adam Vasconcellos was picked up around 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of E. Main Street after he was found to be stumbling around and obviously intoxicated, according to the police report.While being transported to the county jail Vasconcellos slipped his cuffs and began kicking the doors and windows from the back of the patrol car.The officers pulled over to stop Vasconcellos and when they opened the door he lunged at one of them. According to the police report, Vasconcellos grabbed the officer’s throat and fought violently with him. After a struggle the officers were able to subdue Vasconcellos and transport him the rest of the way to the jail.There were no serious injuries to the officers, the Turlock Police Department reported.Vasconcellos was charged with assault on a peace officer and public intoxication.
