Police investigate reports of guns at local school sites

Turlock Police investigated two reports of nonlethal weapons being seen at school campuses this week.

On Monday, a Turlock High School student reported seeing another student with a gun that was later determined to be an airsoft pistol. A day later, at Turlock Junior High, a student who was about to be searched discarded an item that resembled a firearm, which turned out to be a BB gun.

“We take great pride in always being transparent, so that parents can make the best decisions for their family,” said TUSD Director of Communications Marie Russell. “And we will always err on the side of caution. Our message to students is: ‘Never bring any kind of weapon to school. And if you see something, say something.’”

According to Turlock Police Department Public Affairs Analyst Dominique Sanchez, several students were interviewed about the Turlock High incident, which was initially reported to THS Principal David Kline.

Campus Resource Officer Gustavo Gomez conducted the investigation.

“It was a serious allegation,” said Sanchez. “That’s why the resource officers looked into it right away.”

After an extensive search for a weapon was unsuccessful on Tuesday, it was learned that a student brought an airsoft pistol to school in order return it to another student from whom he borrowed the week prior.

“This incident violates the TUSD Student Accountability Code, and we will follow this guidance to determine appropriate consequences,” the district said in a statement.

The incident at TJHS was addressed “promptly and appropriately, in partnership with law enforcement,” the TJHS said in a separate statement. “To our knowledge, it was not shown to other students.”

Why the student brought the BB gun to school was not clear.

“We understand that situations like this can be concerning for both students and their families,” the statement continued. “Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we prioritize student and staff safety.”
