A botched theft at a discount store led to robbery and hit and run charges for a Turlock woman on Wednesday.

According to the Turlock Police Department, Christine Steele, 35, had taken computer equipment from the Big Lots store at 3101 Geer Rd. and was attempting to drive away with it when she was confronted by a store employee.

The employee was trying to remove the stolen property from the mini-van, when Steele backed up and ran over the employee’s foot, causing moderate injuries, according to the police department.

A witness followed Steele as she drove out of the parking lot and attempted to make her escape. The witness continued to trail Steele and saw her crash into a parked car on Niagra Street.

Following the crash, Steele pulled into the parking lot of Lakeside Apartments and then fled the area on foot.

After a brief search at the apartment complex, officers found Steele and took her into custody. Several witnesses were able to identify Steele as the driver and the suspect from the store, according to the police department.

The stolen property was recovered. Steele was booked on suspicion of robbery and hit and run causing injuries.
