Stanislaus County is warning residents of a scam trying to get money out of people by claiming they have a lien on their property.
The county was made aware that individuals have been getting calls that appear to be from a number associated with the Stanislaus County Clerk Recorder.
The caller states he is with the Recorder’s office and needs to collect a debt regarding a lien on the resident’s home. The caller says the debt must be paid immediately and that they can take payment with a credit card.
The County believes the scammers are spoofing the Recorder’s office phone number to make it appear legitimate.
“Be warned, the County Clerk Recorder will never call residents and request payment for any reason. Please call law enforcement if you experience a similar call,” the County wrote on their Facebook page.
