THS student arrested for allegedly creating ‘smash or pass’ website
crime

Authorities Tuesday announced the arrest of a Turlock High student who allegedly started a website sharing photographs of teenagers and encouraged them to rank one another's attractiveness.

The nature of the charges was not immediately clear.

Turlock Unified School District initially sent a notice to parents about the discovery of the website on Monday evening. Officials said they were working with the Turlock Police Department, information technology staff, and the company the school uses for photography to determine who was behind the website and how the photographs were accessed.

The website displayed students’ photos and then under each picture were the options to rank the student as either  “Smash” (a slang term for sex) or “Pass.”

In a later message Monday night, TUSD said the social media page connected to the website no longer exists, though the Instagram account said: "offline for now ... HUGE update coming soon!" The website itself appeared to have been "seized" and displayed logos purporting to be from the Department of Justice, FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

In a message sent Tuesday, the district said the student was arrested earlier in the afternoon. Because the investigation is ongoing, officials said, they do not have all the details.

"We know that this type of incident is very worrisome, and we can assure families that we are working closely with TPD on this investigation," said the statement.

According to a Turlock High parent, who asked not to be identified due to safety concerns, somebody claiming to be the website's creator had interactions with students regarding the removal of their photos and "rankings" from the site.

The Journal will have more on this story as information develops.
