The Turlock Police Department is investigating a near drowning incident that almost claimed the life of a two-year-old girl.

The near drowning was reported around 5 p.m. Monday at a home in the 300 block of Gikas Lane.

According to the Turlock Police Department, the child had been allowed to play in the backyard where a pool was located. There was no gate around the pool.

The family told investigators the child had been out there for about two minutes when a family member looked outside and saw her in the pool.

The child was not breathing when she was pulled from the water and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene. She was flown via air ambulance to an area hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, said Turlock Police spokesman Russ Holeman.

An investigation into juvenile abuse is ongoing.
