A Turlock teenager believed to have committed a home-invasion robbery that resulted in the death of a 31-year-old man was taken into custody by the Modesto Police Department.

Carlos Flores, 19, of Turlock was apprehended as he tried to enter the United States from Mexico. Flores was extradited to Modesto and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail Thursday for murder, robbery and multiple warrants.

Flores was arrested in connection to the death of Jose Roberto Sepulveda, 31, of Modesto.

Around 9:45 p.m. Aug. 2, the Modesto Police Department received an emergency call from a man reporting he had been shot during a robbery at a home in the 800 block of Pine Tree Lane.

The female resident had arrived home with her three children when she was approached by two suspects, both armed with guns, according to Modesto Police spokesperson Heather Graves.

The suspects forced the woman and children inside the home, where they confronted Sepulveda, who was already inside the home.

Sepulveda was shot during a struggle he had with the two suspects, according to investigators.

The two suspects fled the residence on foot. Sepulveda died at the residence.

The identity of the second suspect is unknown at this time.

Detectives continue their investigation into this case, but believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the suspects and victim may have known each other. A motive and details of what may have been taken during the robbery are still under investigation, Graves said.

In February of this year, Flores was with another 19-year-old man who was shot in the leg while walking in a Turlock park. The victim was uncooperative with detectives, but did tell them he was walking through Columbia Park around 11 p.m. when he heard someone whistle from a vehicle driving by and then multiple shots were fired, one of which struck him in the leg.

A car was seen speeding in the area immediately after the area and was stopped by Turlock Police officers and the occupants detained. It was learned the occupants were friends of the victim and were putting him in the car when officers started arriving and they left him at the park. Flores was identified as the driver and was taken into custody on a misdemeanor warrant out of Modesto.
