A Turlock man angry at being told to move out of his family’s home, tried to set the residence on fire, according to the Turlock Police Department.

Daniel Ayala, 28, was arrested on suspicion of arson on an inhabited building following the Sunday evening incident.

The police department was called to the home in the 4100 block of Sage Way around 7 p.m. Sunday. The residents told officers that Ayala had been told that he had to move out of the garage that he had been living in. The family locked the door between the home and the garage, but the front door was unlocked, which is how Ayala gained entry into the home, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Steve Rodrigues.

According to the police report Ayala turned on all four burners on the stove and lit a towel and a cereal box on fire. A family member saw the fire and quickly put the items into the sink and put the fire out. No injuries were reported and the fire department was not called to the scene.

Ayala had left the home before the officers arrived, but returned around 2 a.m. Monday, Rodrigues said. The police were called and he was taken into custody without incident.

Ayala remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail.
