Turlock man killed in collision with Freightliner at rural intersection

TURLOCK — A 34-year-old Turlock man was killed Monday morning in a collision involving a tractor-trailer at a rural Stanislaus County intersection, authorities said.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as David Torres Garcia, who was the sole occupant of a Toyota sedan that collided with a Freightliner truck at the intersection of South Carpenter Road and Monte Vista Avenue.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:14 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Emergency crews arrived to find both vehicles with significant damage. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Julio Hernandez, of Fresno, was driving a 2020 Freightliner combination southbound on Carpenter Road when Garcia, traveling eastbound on Monte Vista Avenue, entered the intersection. The Toyota was struck on its left side by the front of the Freightliner, sending it off the roadway in a southwesterly direction.

CHP officials said it remains unclear whether Garcia stopped at the posted stop sign before entering the intersection. Hernandez was not injured in the crash.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and drugs or alcohol are not suspected as contributing factors, the CHP said.

The intersection was temporarily closed for investigation, with detours causing minimal delays to traffic.

The incident remains under investigation.
