Just days before Independence Day, the Turlock Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit confiscated approximately 20 pounds of illegal fireworks in a dual operation involving a traffic stop and residential search, authorities said.

During the investigation, 18-year-old Turlock resident Miles Smith was arrested for possession and sales of dangerous fireworks. Another 18-year-old, Austin Oyler, was taken into custody for purchasing the illegal explosives, police said.

A subsequent search of Smith’s residence yielded additional fireworks, marijuana, and prescription pills, according to the department.

Officials said the enforcement is part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal fireworks activity and ensure public safety during holiday celebrations.
