Two men are in critical condition after leading a Merced County Sheriff’s deputy on a short pursuit that ended when the stolen vehicle they were in crashed.

The names of the two men have not been released. Both sustained major injuries and are said to be in critical condition, said Merced Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Coburn.

The incident began at 12:18 a.m. Thursday when a deputy spotted a 1994 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen out of Atwater.

The deputy attempted to stop the car at 4th Street and El Capitan Avenue in Delhi, but the driver sped off.

The pursuit ended about 15 seconds later when the driver lost control of the Honda and crashed it into a ditch at South and 2nd avenues, Coburn said.

The Honda flipped over and landed on its roof in the intersection. Both men were ejected from the vehicle during the collision.

One suspect was flown by helicopter to a Modesto hospital and the other was taken to a Modesto hospital by ambulance.

When the vehicle overturned a small handgun fell out and was found in the intersection, Coburn said. Deputies also found ammunition for a shotgun in the Honda.
