It’s not often that law enforcement is in the position to grant a person’s wish, but that was the case Tuesday when a Hilmar man said he wanted to go to jail.

The 24-year-old Hilmar man, later identified as Eduardo Luis Parra, was granted his request for a ajil cell after he smashed the door in at the Westamerica Bank at 8019 Lander Avenue in Hilmar.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Department was alerted to the bank at 9:44 p.m. Tuesday by the alarm sounding. The first deputies to arrive found the front door had been smashed with a rock and Parra standing there waiting for them.

It did not appear anything had been taken from the bank, according to the sheriff’s department.

Parra was booked into the Merced County jail on suspicion of felony burglary and vandalism. Jail records show he remains in custody as of Thursday night, in lieu of a $20,000 bail.
