Turlock High students proved themselves masters of math when they came in third place recently at the 39th Annual Dick Schaff Math Superbowl.

For the first time, high schools throughout the Central Valley merged with the junior high schools which combined for a total of 10 high schools, two charter schools, five junior high and middle schools competing in the event hosted by the Stanislaus County Math Council.

 The math competition consisted of three events that included, the team competition (five member teams), the huddle competition (teams of two or more), and the individual competition (one student takes test in their subject). 

Other schools proved to be no match for the THS Bulldogs as they placed third in the team competition.  Team members Angie Mendoza (calculus), Henna Hundal (pre-calculus), Mandip Bassi (pre-calculus), Heath Rojas (advanced algebra), and Terrakorn Pongpipat (geometry) were recognized for their hard work.

“These students have worked very hard to get here.  They have spent many hours practicing and preparing for this competition.  We are so proud of all of them,” said THS math department chair Scott Johnson. 

In addition to placing third in the team competition, Hundal took fifth place in the individual pre-calculus test. 

“Henna is a perfectionist.  She is always striving to be the best in whatever she does,” said Hundal’s math analysis teacher Kathlyn Donaldson.

Hundal also placed second in the Huddle competition along with Sofie Bates.  Olyvia Vasquez and Bassi placed third in pre-calculus, and Gerrit Dykzeul and Mendoza placed fifth in calculus. 

“Preparing for these exams seems to make my high school exams easier.  I’m thankful that I was able to compete.  My depth of understanding in math has increased so much,” said Bassi.
