Modesto Junior College student and Hilmar resident Karessa Mann was selected as a 2011 scholarship recipient by the Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. (DFA), a national milk marketing cooperative.

Mann is a sophomore at Modesto Junior College double majoring in dairy and agriculture science with a minor in agriculture communications. Upon graduation, Mann plans to be an advocate and spokeswoman for the dairy industry to help bridge the gap between misconception and understanding of industry-related topics.

This year, DFA’s scholarship committee identified 14 recipients to receive a combined $15,750. Selection criteria included a commitment and passion for a career in the dairy industry; extracurricular activities, awards and work experience; and academic achievement.

Dairy industry supporters are invited to contribute to DFA’s Scholarship Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions can be made payable to the DFA Cares Foundation Scholarship and mailed to Dairy Farmers of America, ATTN: DFA Cares Foundation Scholarship, 10220 N. Ambassador Dr., Kansas City, MO 64153.

The application period for next year’s scholarship program will open in the fall and close in January 2012. For more information, visit www.dfamilk.com/careers/scholarships.
