Approximately 300 elementary school children from throughout the county participated in the 27th Annual Elementary Science Olympiad on Saturday at Walnut Elementary Education Center in Turlock.
Fourteen elementary schools from around the county participated in the event, including: Cloverland, Dennis Earl, Fair Oaks, Fremont Open Plan, Grayson, Great Valley Academy, Hickman Charter, Hughes, Julien, Keyes, Magnolia, Our Lady of Fatima, Sierra View, and Walnut.

Student teams competed in 17 events, that ranged in hands-on building to timed written tests.
Walnut Elementary’s Gold team took third place overall with first place finishes in the Crime Busters, Disease Detectives, Don’t Bug Me and Paddle Boat events, second place finishes in the Elements and Starry Starry Night events, third place finishes in the Straw Tower and Treasure Hunt events, and fourth place finishes in the Rock Hound and Simple Machines events.
Walnut Elementary’s Green team took fourth place overall with a first place finish in the Knock, Knock Who’s There event, second place finishes in the Catapult, Disease Detective and Paddle Boat events, a third place finish in the Elements event, and fifth place finishes in the Simple Machines and Write It – Do It events.
Turlock’s Julien Elementary Blue team had a fifth place finish overall with second place finishes in the Rock Hound and Simple Machines events, fourth place finishes in the Knock, Knock Who’s There and Starry Starry Night events, and fifth place finishes in the Can Race, Catapult, Weather or Not and Straw Tower events.
