Ceres rotary Club hosted the semi-final round of the 2016 Rotary District 5220 Speech Tournament on Feb. 19 and awarded the first place prize to Anoopjot K. Bains of Turlock High School (right) and second place to Gabriella Germann of Central Valley High School.

Participating students from Ceres and Turlock High Schools competed in the 2016 Rotary District 5220 Speech Tournament on Feb. 19, where first place winners moved on to the Central Valley/Sierra District Finals.

The Ceres Rotary club hosted the semi-final round of the tournament, with the “Be a Gift to the World,” theme that President, K.R. Ravindram from the Rotary Club of Sri Lanka chose as the theme to represent his year in office.

Each year local Rotary Clubs encourage high school students to enter the Rotary International Speech Competition, which is based on the presidential theme of Rotary International.

The winners of last Friday’s round were: first place Anoopjot K. Bains, Turlock High School Junior, $175 and Second Place Gabriella Germann, Central Valley Senior, $125.

Students were to incorporate the “Be a Gift to the World” theme as it applied to their current lives and toward their future, including educational goals and involvement in community service.  The speech was to incorporate key components, including how Rotarians and Rotary clubs serve as a “Gift to the World.”

First Place winners from throughout Rotary District 5220’s 53 clubs will compete in the final round on March 19, at Ceres High School.
