‘On the Edge: Abstraction at Work’ now at Carnegie
On the Edge 1
John Kifer won Best of Show for his work Spawn, acrylic on panel

In a new Lobby Gallery exhibition, One the Edge: Abstraction at Work, the Carnegie Arts Center shares works created by 44 artists from the Central Valley, the Sierra Foothills, the Central Coast, the Bay Area and beyond.

In a call for entries that went out in the fall, artists were invited to submit works in any format or medium using abstraction.

“Using abstraction to amplify, distort, or push the limits of our perception is something many artists experiment with. Abstraction describes a wide spectrum of techniques and approaches, all of which can help an artist be more expressive,” said CAC Director Lisa McDermott.

Juror for the exhibition is John Accurso, Professor of Art at Columbia College. He selected 60 works from among more than 160 submissions.  McDermott noted that “this was a record number of submissions for one of our Lobby Gallery exhibitions.”

With so many pieces accepted for the exhibition, McDermott thinks viewers might be surprised at the variety.

“Some of these works have subtle abstract elements such as distorted shapes or colors; others eliminate the representation of subject matter completely and want us to explore elements of art like line, color, texture, and space for their own sake,” she said.

The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, photographs, collages, sculpture, ceramics, digital and mixed media works of all kinds.

The exhibition will be on display through April 25. A free, public reception for the artists will take place on from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 5 as part of Turlock’s quarterly Art Around Town art stroll.
