City seeks applications for commission openings
city of turlock

The City of Turlock is seeking local residents interested in serving on a public commission, as two seats will soon be open on the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission and one seat open on the Planning Commission.

Turlock Planning Commissioner Geoff Powers will be terming out Dec. 31, and two PARC vacancies will become open that same day.

The Turlock Planning Commission is comprised of seven regular and two alternate members, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Each member serves four-year terms with term limits established at 12 years. Each alternate member serves a term of two years. The Turlock Planning Commission holds regularly scheduled meetings on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings are held at Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway, in the Yosemite Community Room and begin at 7 p.m.

In 2020, members of the Planning Commission will be the first to hear Conditional Use Permit application proposals from the four cannabis dispensaries opening in town, determining their location and set of rules the businesses will have to abide by in order to operate within City limits. The Planning Commission is also the first to approve rezoning proposals and development agreements for commercial projects in town prior to the City Council.

PARC is comprised of seven members, appointed by the Mayor with approval from the City Council. The commission holds regularly scheduled meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. Meetings are held at Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway, in the Yosemite Community Room and begin at 6 p.m.

Currently, PARC has seen several ad hoc committees form to oversee the feasibility of several projects within the city, including an urban garden, a national fitness campaign and public art projects.

Citizens interested in serving on the Planning Commission or PARC must turn in their applications by 5 p.m. Friday. Applications titled “Citizens Desiring to Serve their City” can be obtained by visiting www.cityofturlock.org or by contacting Administrative Services at 156 S. Broadway, Suite 230, or by calling 209-668-5540.

For any questions regarding the application process or serving on any City board, commissions and committees, contact the Office of the City Clerk at jland@turlock.ca.us.
