U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) has been named one of Working Mother Magazine’s “Best in Congress,” an award which recognizes lawmakers who promote legislation which would help working parents.

Denham was one of 30 U.S. Representatives and Senators selected for the annual award, and one of eight Republicans.

"I’m honored to receive this award for supporting working families," Denham said. "As a father, farmer, small business owner and Congressman, I know the difficulties of balancing the responsibilities of a family and the requirements of work. One of my top priorities is to help put Valley residents back to work; a priority that aims to accomplish the bigger, more important goal of helping build strong families.”

Winners were selected based on voting record, sponsorship of legislation, constituent casework, and “other activities that demonstrate their commitment to improving the lives of working families.” Legislators were also scored on their own employment policies and practices, and whether their offices support working parents.

“Most people don't realize that our Congressional representatives each set their own policies for the staff they employ,” said Carol Evans, president of Working Mother Media. “Those who allow their employees flexible work arrangements and paid family leave are leading by example.”

In Working Mother’s write-up, featured in the August/September 2012 issue, Denham was lauded for keeping up on his own parental duties by attending his children’s sporting events, and for offering staffers flexibility to attend family obligations. Denham was also recognized for supporting legislation which would secure more funding for rural schools, emergency services, and demonstration projects meant to lead to improvement in child welfare programs.
