Fate of former homeless center building still unknown

The City of Turlock owned property at 1030 East Ave. is rarely used since the Turlock Gospel Mission moved its Homeless Assistance Ministry to another location last fall.

Since the Turlock Gospel Mission moved its Homeless Assistance Ministry out of the City of Turlock owned property at 1030 East Ave. last fall, the building has seen little activity. In the past, the building formerly known as the Youth Center was the site of a variety of recreation activities before been leased to the gospel mission.

“At this point we’re evaluating what we are going to do next with the facility,” said Assistant to the City Manager for Housing and Development Maryn Pitt, noting that the process is slow moving.

The facility has a series of upgrades that need to be made, most importantly making the site compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This law requires that elements of the building are accessible to those with handicaps, such as the restrooms. Presently, when the City rents the space it is charged with coordinating ADA compliant portable restroom facilities for the temporary renters.

“Upgrades need to be made and we currently need to figure out how we’re going to finance those,” said Pitt.
