LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP: Alanis to serve as vice chair of Assembly Ag Committee
Juan Alanis
Assemblymember Juan Alanis

Assemblyman Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) was recently elevated to the position of Vice Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture. In addition, the Assemblyman was added to the essential committees of Labor and Employment and Military and Veterans Affairs.

"I'm grateful to Assembly Speaker Rivas and Republican Leader Gallagher for their respective appointment and recommendation to these important committees," said Alanis. "I look forward to continuing my engagement on the issues these committees will tackle next year."

Critical issues like food access and cost of living, fentanyl and retail theft, business licensing, workers' rights, support for veterans' access to benefits, consumer water rates, long-standing water rights, and access to California's beautiful public spaces are all anticipated to be taken up in the coming year.

When the legislature returns on Jan. 3, Assemblyman Alanis will serve on the following committees:

·         Committee on Agriculture (Vice-Chair)

·         Committee on Public Safety (Vice-Chair)

·         Committee on Business and Professions

·         Committee on Labor and Employment

·         Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs

·         Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife

"These committees complement the wide-ranging and diverse district I was elected to represent," said Alanis. "My neighbors and constituents in the 22nd Assembly District have made clear what issues are most important to them. I will continue fighting in Sacramento for good paying jobs, better healthcare, safe communities, parental rights, rights for the working class, taking care of our veterans, and affordable cost of living for everyone. I appreciate the trust and confidence given to me by colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do just that with these committee assignments. I have worked hard to develop working relationships built on hard-earned trust, and that's why I believe I have been sat on these committees of importance, including holding the Vice Chairmanship of two critical committees to my district: Public Safety and Agriculture.”

Senator Alvarado-Gil responds to federal judge's decision to block SB 2

Senator Marie-Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson) commended the recent decision by U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney to block the implementation of Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), which was slated to take effect on Jan. 1, 2024. Judge Carney deemed a key provision of the bill as "unconstitutional," upholding the fundamental rights of law-abiding citizens in California who have been granted a concealed weapons permit (CCW).

SB 2, which aims to restrict concealed carry privileges in various public spaces, faced substantial criticism from constituents and gun rights advocates within Senator Alvarado-Gil’s district. Senate District 4, known for its unwavering support of the Second Amendment, has consistently championed the rights of responsible gun owners.

"I am pleased with Judge Carney’s decision to protect the constitutional rights of our law-abiding citizens. The Second Amendment is a cornerstone of our nation's history, and while we recognize the importance of public safety, it is imperative that we strike a balance that respects the rights of responsible gun owners," said Alvarado-Gil.

The Senator added there is a need for thoughtful and comprehensive legislation to address public safety concerns without compromising the rights of citizens.

The Senator encouraged constituents to stay engaged in the legislative process and said she would continue to advocate for responsible and constitutionally sound policies.

Senator Alvarado-Gil represents the 4th Senate District including the Counties of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne.
